New students audition on their instruments at announced times. Re-auditioning for previously enrolled students is not required. Sign up to audition here.
Notes:
- Auditions will be evaluated on tone quality, intonation, rhythm, technique, and musicality.
- Memorization is not required.
- Selected applicants may be assigned to different ensembles or parts depending on their skill level and the ensemble's needs.

Audition Requirements
Yakima Youth Symphony Orchestra
- Scales for strings played at your preferred tempo and rhythm:
- Violin: G Melodic Minor
- Viola and Cello: C Melodic Minor
- Bass: G Melodic Minor (2 octave)
- Scales for brass, wind, and percussion played at your preferred tempo and rhythm:
- Woodwinds:
- Two major scales of your choice (two octaves when possible)
- One octave chromatic scale (Concert Bb)
- Brass:
- Two major scales of your choice (at least one octave)
- One chromatic scale demonstrating the full range (Concert Bb)
- Percussion (Mallets only):
- Two major scales (two octaves preferred)
- One chromatic scale
- Solo: An excerpt from a favorite solo, orchestra piece, or etude of your choice (please provide printouts for Mr. Petilo and Mr. Rooney)
- Percussion:
- Snare Drum: Short etude or solo demonstrating rhythm and dynamics
- Mallets (Xylophone/Marimba): One melodic piece or etude
- Timpani (if applicable): Tuning demonstration + short etude
- Note: Percussionists should prepare at least two areas (e.g., snare + mallets) for a well-rounded audition.
- Sight-reading: Excerpt in up to 4 sharps/flats provided at audition
Yakima Ensemble for Strings
- Scales: A major scale (and minor scale if possible) or your choosing at a comfortable tempo
- Solo: An excerpt from a favorite solo or orchestra piece of your choice (please provide printouts for Mr. Petilo and Mr. Rooney)
- Sight-reading: Excerpt with 0 sharps/flats or 1 flat provided at audition
