Don Quixote, by Miguel de Cervantes, is a foundational work of Western literature, often called the first modern novel. It follows Alonso Quijano, a nobleman who reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his mind and becomes the knight-errant Don Quixote, setting out on adventures with his squire Sancho Panza, famously trying to battle windmills he mistakes for giants.

“Without craftsmanship, inspiration is a mere reed shaken in the wind.” —Johannes Brahms
While Brahms’ musings bear a similarity to the 1977 hit song, Dust in the Wind, surprisingly, one did not inspire the other. Brahms is making reference to the only single reed instrument group popular during his lifetime, the clarinet family.
In a few weeks, the Yakima Symphony Orchestra’s will feature Hsing-Hui Hsu performing the famous bass clarinet solo in the dramatic work by Richard Strauss, Don Quixote. The bass clarinet is one of the instruments that depict Sancho Panzo, Don Quixote’s loyal squire—but is actually his boastfully illiterate servant—who feeds Don Quixote’s fantastical delusions. The piece's first variation depicts Don Quixote mistaking a field of windmills for monstrous giants, Perhaps the bass clarinet is simply a reed in the wind.
