Yakima Symphony Orchestra Celebrates 50 Years with a Special Musical Release

Amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, an important milestone quietly passed: the Yakima Symphony Orchestra (YSO) celebrated its 50th anniversary. For half a century, the YSO has enriched the Yakima community with exceptional cultural and symphonic music. In honor of this remarkable achievement, the orchestra released a special recording: Mendelssohn 2 & Mendelssohn 2.1.

This new compilation includes a stunning performance of Mendelssohn’s monumental choral Symphony No. 2, brought to life by the Yakima Symphony Orchestra and Yakima Symphony Chorus under the masterful direction of Lawrence Golan. The work’s dual nature—part transcendent exploration of faith, part Romantic-era passion—is executed with grandeur, tenderness, and tonal depth, demonstrating the YSO's artistry and precision.

Adding to this celebration, the recording features The Night is Departing, a commissioned composition by Kenji Bunch that offers a modern, evocative interpretation inspired by Mendelssohn. This innovative piece brings a fresh dimension to the anniversary program, capturing the essence of the YSO's legacy and forward-thinking spirit.

The production team for this release includes Producer David Rogers, Engineer Andrew David Meyer, and Mastering Specialist Melanie Montgomery, with support from patrons Greta Bryan, Rosemary Gottlieb, and David Rogers.

Celebrate the YSO's 50 years of excellence by exploring this extraordinary recording. Samples are available online, and CDs can be purchased for $10 at the YSO office, 32 N 3rd St, Suite 333, Yakima, or by calling 509-248-1414.
